Rabbits different from Hares

We often use the words Rabbit as a synonym for Hare. But do you know that both are completely different species! Though Rabbit and Hare look alike, there are too many differences between them. These are just a few that needs a mention.

- Rabbits are born blind and they don't have fur with them at the time of birth. But Hares are not so weak at their birth. They are born with fur and could see right from the time they are born.

- It's not just fur and vision that Rabbits lack at their birth. They can't even hop or move around without any protection. Hares on the other hand could live a normal life right from the day of their entry into this world.

- Hares just live on the surface of the earth. They hop around bushes and hide behind the trees. But Rabbits do need a cozy house to live in. They spend much of their time in burrows.

- Rabbits don't seem to be interested in a variety of costumes. The colour of their fur remains unchanged over the year. Whereas hares do change the colour of their fur along with the season! They appear brownish in summer and white in winter.

- Hares are larger in size than Rabbits. They even have longer ears and black markings over their fur which distinguishes them clearly from Rabbits.

And most importantly... Rabbits are more social than Hares and often live in colonies. Hares are so secluded that humans were unable to domesticate them. So! The species you see in someone's house are Rabbits and not Hares!
